Do you ever go into anyone's home and start browsing their bookshelves?

Why do we do that?

Is it to find a point of commonality with which to start a conversation? To get a book recommendation? Or to find out more about your host, find something out about how they tick?

I venture it is all of those.

I went to my first CrossFit session last night and needed to have some fun today. So I rounded up as many paleo bloggers as I could and asked them a personal question. (Because we all want to know the answers to personal questions, don't we!)

What are you reading right now?

Can you believe it? In nearly three years of being paleo, I have never tried my hand at a paleo pizza!

This could be due to the fact I'm not a huge fan of pizza myself, a sentiment not shared by the rest of my family, I hasten to add. Or it could be down to the fact that I have found making paleo substitutes for former favorites not to be an entirely successful strategy. Or it could be that having quietened my family's longing for stringy cheese, atop squishy tomato sauce, lain upon a fluffy mattress of dough, I didn't want to remind them of anything, lest the longing return.

But all that changed on Memorial Day when I made six pizza crusts (one ended up "repurposed"), topped them with identical toppings and offered them up to expert tasters: three teenagers and a man.

Is it all about the toppings?

I topped each pizza with the same ingredients: slices of roma tomatoes, caramelized onions, arugula, prosciutto, goats cheese.

Do you get in your own way? Do you find yourself doing something while all the time you’re doing it, there’s a little voice in your head wailing, “Noooooooooooooo!”

We’ve all been there. And will be again sometime in the future, if we’re honest.

We get an idea, set a goal, possibly even hatch a vague plan. But somewhere along the way our progress stalls, backslides, then disappears altogether.

We give up, feeling like a failure, another attempt at healthier habits ending up in the graveyard of broken dreams, strewn with fast food packaging and candy wrappers.

Oh dear.

There are many ways we stop ourselves achieving our goals. Some of us have honed this particular behavior trait with great skill and precision. But if we want to be successful with our paleo diet, we need to turn things around. Do things differently. See the list below. Do you make these mistakes?

I’ve sat where you’re sat.

I’ve devoured the articles on paleo and the blog posts, followed the in-post links. I’ve pored over the studies, wondering if the answer to my problem lies in the full transcript or if I can skip all that and just read the summary.

I’ve sunk thousands of dollars into doctors, treatments and supplements not covered by my insurance. I’ve had times when I’ve felt a fool for even hoping that something as simple as changing my diet would ever work.

I’ve sat right there and I know how frustrating, scary and soul destroying it is. You are not alone.

I was just like you.

I was desperate, scared and exhausted. I was in pain, both acute and specific, ache-y and general. I’d already sacrificed so many years, hopes and dreams to ill-health. Was my life destined to be characterized this way?
